frieda oxenham: haiku atc swap

I have received 4 ATCs for our haiku swap from my dear friend in Scotland, Frieda Oxenham; she wanted me to choose one for myself. I am lucky to have many of Frieda's ATCs as we are in a monthly exchange together and have known each other for a long time. I am especially drawn to Frieda's mixed media work and these ATCs for our swap are no exception. Below is the one I chose for myself -the one on the right, plus the other 3 for the swap. Frieda, I adore your ATCs and the haiku you wrote. I am also glad to see you using them to further your studies! Frieda is documenting all of the gravestones in the West Linton, Peeblesshire graveyard. Please see her blog devoted to this.

This is approximately Frieda's 16th creative swap!  The number of posts next to Frieda's name at the bottom of this blog is 22 now I think, but that is because I often previewed her work with a post, and added a tag of her name and a link to her blog. She is often early in sending in her swaps and they make lovely examples! Thank you, Frieda, for everything.

Frieda Oxenham - August ATCs: I am

Frieda's August ATCs have also arrived from Scotland (her postcards came the other day) - yay! The August ATC theme is "I am" . . . . . and Frieda has understood this idea perfectly. I love what she did with it. She has written all about her process making them,  here on her blog. You will want to check it out! Frieda signed up for 2 sets of three ATCs and also sent an extra one for me, so I have 7 to share with you.

I chose the one you see directly above, bottom left. The funny part was when I went to Frieda's blog to get the link for her post about how she made them, I see that this is the one she said she was gong to keep herself! Did she make 2 pretty much the same and I chose the same one she did??? OOPps! There was another ATC waay at the top of her post, the one I kept is one of 2 she enlarged ; ^  )  Even though we live far apart, we have a lot of coincidences and similarities, it is even funny sometimes . . . . Frieda said it would be interesting to see which ATC I chose for myself. I picked that particular one because even though Frieda is a young girl in that photo,  it really looks like her to me. I think it also reminds me of myself at that age. I just love these ATCs! I love all the color in the background, how Frieda used her handwriting, stamping, and she made paper cards not fabric -a challenge for her I think! Anyways, she has got me thinking about mine . . .

Frieda Oxenham - Postcard mail Art swap!

My dear friend Frieda, who lives in Scotland, is the very first to send in her postcards for our 'a summer's day' mail art swap. She did something really fun too! First, Frieda made an extra postcard just for me and then she sent it through the mail separately - only the one she made for me! I received that postcard first and it was such fun! A few days later I got her package of three postcards for the swap in the mail. : ^  ) Frieda's postcards are a mix of fabric and paper and she describes how she made them in this post on her blog . . . here: A summer's day fabric postcards.

Frieda created the fabric background herself -read how on her blog!

She also created the strip of fabric with a flower design that says, A summer's Day.

Then she took this flower design, lightly printed it on paper and used it for the back.

My postcard is the one directly above.  ; ^ )  thank you, Frieda!!! I love it.

#1.Frieda Oxenham: Little Book Swap!

Frieda sent 3 very colourful books for the swap in easy to open/re-seal bags,
plus a special gift book for me that included a photo of her!
A stray square of fabric serendipitously traveled along too. ; * )

My dear friend Frieda in Scotland was the very first to get her little books in for the swap -in April- when they are not due until June!! When she joined she told me she might not have time to make little books for the swap but she wanted to register just for my lesson because she said they are,"always so very informative". I was truly honored and told her if she could make a book or two it would be great and if not, don't worry! As it turns out a few days later she wrote me and asked me to guess who was making little books??? I was so happy! Here's what I have received from Frieda -click for details:

She made a version of the 'Instant Book' but sewed it closed, I believe.
She used her newly made "blipfoto" cards to tuck into the books to identify!

Front cover, inside cover, pages 1,2,3,4, inside back cover and Back cover -
Perfect! And so colourful -filled with stamping & collage. 

Frieda even sewed some of her own photos from the
Blipfoto cards she had made directly on to her books.

The top of the book says, friendship is the essence of life.
I am definitely going to do something with the little square of stray fabric from Frieda's desk!

If you look closely at the cover of my book above, you may be able to see a transparency of Frieda's face with her eyes on either side of the Eiffel tower. This makes sense, as frieda loves all things French!

Today is the opening of Frieda's solo exhibition for her Art Quilts held at The Gallery, Tweeddale Museum, Chambers Institute, High Street, Peebles, Scotland, UK from the 23rd April till 28th Mary 28th 2011. There is a private view on Saturday 30th April from 2 - 4pm. All are welcome!! -You'll find Frieda's email in the sidebar of her blog linked above should you need to contact her. I am so very happy for her to have the opportunity to showcase her talents in a solo exhibition, many congratulations, Frieda!!!

Frieda Oxenham: Vintage Note Card swap!

I received Frieda's note cards the other day and they are so delicious. The note cards and envelopes even smell good because she coffee dyed them! It did take Frieda's package about 3 weeks to travel from the Scottish Borders to Florida . . . so please make sure you plan accordingly, especially if you are mailing overseas. You have 5 weeks to get your note cards delivered to me! You'll see 4 sets below, as Frieda made an extra for me. Thank you so much, it will be difficult to choose . . .

Frieda Oxenham: mail ART swap

The first complete set of mail art envelopes have landed in my mailbox all on  the same day, from my very good friend Frieda Oxenham in Peebleshire, Scotland, UK! We were wondering if they would arrive on the same day, or not? I found them all in my mailbox today, along with a beautiful Halloween envelope from JoAnn Reichert. Last week I also received one envelope from Marianne Baugher and one from Marjorie Jumisco. I have added Marjorie's and Marianne's envelopes to the blog header and when all of their swap pieces come in I will share them in a post! Here is what I feasted my eyes upon when I saw Frieda's envelopes:

I love the fact that the envelopes look like a quilt -- Frieda is an award-winning quilter!

The backs are wonderful! 

Frieda went an extra mile and made fabric postcards to go inside her beautiful envelopes. Just the envelope would have been just fine! The recipients of these envelopes will be so lucky! Frieda sent 4 envelopes when 3 is the requirement, so I got to choose one to keep for myself. I had to pick blindly, not knowing which postcard was inside -I had seen them all on Frieda's blog post. Funny thing was, when I opened the envelope, there was one of my favorites! Thank  you so much, Frieda. : ^ )

What a lovely way to start showcasing all of the mail art swap pieces! I cannot wait to see yours! Remember to add your return address and if possible, either email me & tell me, or write a note on your envelope if it is EMPTY and should not be opened, thanks! Also, all of your envelopes and postcards should be mailed separately, sent directly through the mail, to me. Have Fun! I am thinking I should send 3 envelopes to myself from the local post office to swap out with the rest!!

I only announced this swap one week ago and we already have 42 participants registered, so cool. I can already tell this is going to be a fantastic swap!
My dear friend Frieda in Scotland registered, and has even finished and mailed her pieces already, wow! You can catch a sneak peek here on her blog. I did not know if Frieda would be able join in because she is working towards finishing up work for her solo exhibition, "color-quilts-collage" which will be held at the Tweeddale Museum in Peebles, Scotland April 2nd - May 28th, 2011. Frieda is an award-winning quilt artist. The most exciting part for me is I am planning a visit to her in the middle of this exhibition and we will go see it together! I have not booked my flight yet, but there is plenty of time. It is really so exciting! Frieda & I have been corresponding and sharing our art for 5 or 6 years now. When Frieda's mail art pieces arrive, I will scan them so you can view them in detail, postage stamps and all. She has gone above & beyond and also tucked beautiful fabric postcards she made inside each envelope. You can see them on her blog.

I have needed to send off a few things lately and created a few Mail Art envelopes rather quickly with rubber stamps and cool postage stamps. Here are a couple of simple ideas for you, below:

Frieda's Tags for the Technique swap arrived this weekend. That was early, and they were the first to arrive for this swap-yay! Her work is just fabulous. Frieda Oxenham: Alpha Stamps garden variety swap!

We are all very lucky my good friend who lives in Scotland, Frieda Oxenham, is participating in this swap! I just received her package today and everything is simply top-notch!! Frieda created 4 postcards and 2 ATCs (1 a hostess gift) that are a combination of paper (card stock) and fabric-paper, one of my favorite things that she creates. 4x4 collage swap -roads+paths: Frieda Oxenham, Scotland UK

I will start off with a detail of one of Frieda's 4x4 collages for our swap- Click on the image to see a lot more detail! I feel so lucky that my very good friend Frieda Oxenham from Scotland, who is very busy working towards a solo show in 2011 with her amazing art quilts had time to squeeze this swap in. Wow! I included this detailed scan because I love the tree branches Frieda captured in this photograph that are hanging above her snowy lane. Frieda had quite the winter this year with snow december - march; in fact she just wrote me and I think she said they had another snow!! Anyway, let me show you all four 4x4's Frieda created for our swap. All pieces are due in my hands April 24th and the mail is slow as molasses here in Cortez, so get crackin if you have not started yet!
